George Kuchar

Renowned filmmaker George Kuchar joined us yesterday for studio visits, general musings, filmed meals, and a lecture/screening hybrid in Shattuck Annex. We were very lucky to have him, and from what I have heard, those who had studio visits with him were quite pleased.

George is an extremely candid man, and at first comes off as quite soft spoken. Until he gets going. He shared many anecdotes about his process and teaching methods. He talked a lot about macaroni and cheese. He is also, quite frankly, hilarious. Here are some of my favorite quotes that I was able to scribble down...many fell between the cracks because I simply couldn't keep up!

"H.P. Lovecraft hated fish."

"Hollywood is all covered...why bother?"

"Also, when people don't show up, we use dummies."

"I don't have a car...I'm not a storm chaser. I describe myself as a storm squatter."

the new Campus Rec Center- Though it's missing the most important component- a sauna, it has a beautiful pool, classrooms, new weight lifting & cardio machines, free classes and a lot of natural light. Free for all students, affordable for faculty and partners.

Congrats on Fall Reviews & Monday Night Seminar News

Congratulations to all of you on the success of your fall reviews. We especially commend the first-years, who jumped in feet first and did a great job presenting solid exploration across the board.

There is no visiting artist for the first Monday night seminar meeting of winter term (January 4) so we will meet as scheduled at 6 in room 320 for a welcome-back potluck and conversation about the program. Bring something good to share and your constructive ideas.

Please remember that the university will be closed Dec. 19-28.

November 16, 2009: James Yood

James Yood traveled all the way to Portland for his PSU lectured on November 16th. Yood teaches contemporary art history and criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he is adjunct professor in the Department of Art History, Theory and Criticism. Active as an art critic and essayist on contemporary art, he is Chicago correspondent to Artforum and tema celeste, and also writes regularly for GLASS magazine, American Craft, Aperture, and Art & Auction. He spoke on the importance of place for an artist and how a region impacts their artistic voice. Thank you so much joining us James Yood!

On November 9th we had the pleasure of hearing Laurel Nakadate speak about her work and career as a photographer, and film maker. The New York video artist has made her mark exploring the arcane psyche of a very peculiar archetype—the single man. Nakadate is known for powerful video and photographic works in which the artist, her subjects, and the viewer are entangled in an unsettling dance of seduction, power, trust, tenderness, loss, and betrayal. Along with her short videos and photographs she spoke about her recent films: Stay the Same, Never Change and Wolf Knife.

On November 2 we were fortunate enough to host Marc Herbst, co-editor of the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest. The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest is a Los Angeles based magazine. The Journal, aware of the possibilities of the boundless moment, searches for ways to think through the cultural and political ramifications of representation. In word and aspiration, The Journal dreams toward a world that differs from "a celebration of the choice already made in the sphere of production, and the consummate result of that choice."

MFA in Visual Studies Lecture: Nina Katchadourian

6:30pm | Lab at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, 724 N.W. Davis St.

Nina Katchadourian’s work exists in a wide variety of media including photography, sculpture, video and sound. Her work has been exhibited domestically and internationally at places such as PS1/MoMA, the Serpentine Gallery, New Langton Arts, Artists Space, SculptureCenter, and the Palais de Tokyo. In 2006 the Tang Museum in Saratoga Springs exhibited a 10-year survey of her work and published an accompanying monograph entitled "All Forms of Attraction." Katchadourian is represented by Sara Meltzer gallery in New York and Catharine Clark gallery in San Francisco.

Aly Khalifa started Gamil Design in October of 1995 to combine his talents of design, engineering and product development. He has degrees in both Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. His work has ranged from innovative wind tunnel testing to a patented eyewear system. He has worked in plastic, fabric and metal in the consumer products, sporting good and medical equipment industries and has been a Visiting Professor at North Carolina State University School of Design and has led many creativity workshops.

The Language of the Nude: Four Centuries of Drawing the Human Body

For centuries, the nude body was the highest expression of human aspiration. Religious figures, gods and goddesses, heroes, and even personifications of abstract ideals found visible form in the undraped human figure. This exhibition of 60 rarely seen drawings from the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California, examines the nude its place in the artist's process, and the ideals and desires it expressed in European art. Tracing how artists saw the body, for example the influence of Michelangelo and Raphael in the 16th century and French Academy nudes in the 18th, it also examines the body's context in Christian art, Classical mythology and literary subjects. Kenneth Goldsmith came as our guest lecturer on October 26th. He teaches Poetics and Poetic Practice at the University of Pennsylvania and is Senior Editor of PENNsound. As a poet he has had many works published, such as Fidget (2000), Soliloquy (2001) and Day (2003) and Goldsmith's American trilogy, The Weather (2005), Traffic, (2007) and Sports, (2008). In terms of planning, we'll start with the Regatta and go from there.

Hannah is developing this (very casually) as a pedagogy type project/practice.

She sites the catalyst for this project starting somewhere between Dan Attoe's class, Connie's raft, the canoedio, and Halloween (pumpkin season).

Joseph Park lectured on 10/19

On October 19th Joseph Park was our third lecturing artist. The Seattle based oil painter took the stage with a colorful presentation that documented two decades of work. He talked about his recent endeavor of founding an art movement named Prismism, which focuses on refracting light depicted in painted objects. His graciousness and good humor was well received by the students that met with him. Thank you so much, Joe!

Mel Zeigler was our second lecturer and spoke on October 12th. The chair of Vanderbilt University's studio arts department regaled us with stories concerning his work from the early 90's until present. He brought along his passion for public art and community involvement. Through examples of his work he spoke of finding ways to infiltrate what he called ‘socially active space.' Thank you so much coming Mel!

My words will have to stand in for the pictures I didn't take while Julie Ault was here.
(Even though there was plenty opportunity)

Ryan and I ended up spending a bit of time with Julie everyday this week; besides seeing her lecture and having studio visits, we took her for a walk in the gorge, to our favorite deli, and to a glassblowing class that she had signed up for out on 82nd St. Her lecture on Monday was extremely rich with reflection on her work with Group Material in the 80's and 90's. Reading from original GM documents, she illuminated the working methods and the changes within the group over its 17 year life-span. At the end she talked a bit about her recent installation work and her current publication and curating projects. Its amazing to see such a long career from its roots. The influence of Group Material's methods and aesthetics is clear, not only in Julie's solo work, but also in the work of so many other artists and curators working today. She also shared a bit with us about her current PhD work and the endeavor of trying to archive and historicize the work of Group Material.

Oh, and she gave Ryan and I some great book recommendations.

At one point during our studio visit she picked up our copy of Felix Gonzalez Torres, the monograph which she edited/created saying, "Oh its nice to see a copy so dirty. That's great." (It had been water damaged in the fire.) She balances this kind of optimism with a really critical mind, I like that.

New Applicant Reviews Feb. 15 and Feb. 22; Interviews

MFA Faculty and current students will review the portfolios and materials of applicants for 2009-11 on Sunday, February 15 in AB 200, beginning at 9 a.m. We will continue through the day until we arrive at a short list.

During the next week Social Practice and Studio Practice students are asked to organize and conduct interviews (in-person for locals, phone for out-of-state) with the short-listed applicants. (Pat has a list of the questions the Studio Practice students devised last year; Harrell or one of the second-year Social Practice students may have the ones they used. Current students may want to draft new questions.)

On Sunday, February 22, 10 a.m., we will meet at Shattuck Annex to discuss the interviews and compile our final acceptance list and wait list.

Though the process may not take as long as it did last year, it can be a long day. Let's plan on bringing something for a potluck brunch.

PSU, Otis, and CCA at SFMoMA

SFMoMa invited Ted Purves (CCA), Susanne Lacey (Otis) and Harrell Fletcher (PSU) to speak on a panel to mark the closing of the exhibition: The Art of Participation: 1950 to Now.
In true Social/Public Practice fashion, they turned it over their students, both to shape and to people the panels. The three panel topics were: Responsiblity, moderated by Ted Purves, Consensus and Decent, moderated by Jen Delos Reyes, and Proffesional and Amateur, moderated by Randal Stott. With a couple of exceptions all students sat on a panel.

Panel participants met up before hand to discuss and frame our panel topics in person, following up on recent email exchanges. There was a great deal of lively conversation and passionate involvement between students before, during and after the panel discussions.

Stephanie Smith is Director of Collections and Exhibitions and Curator of Contemporary Art at the University of Chicago’s Smart Museum of Art. We had a great Question and Answer session with Smith after the lecture.

Smith’s traveling exhibit, Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art, is currently in the Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art until December 7th. The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11-4 PM at Lewis and Clark College where parking is free!

Below are the dates for the end-of-term candidacy reviews for first-year MFA students. These are of longer duration than the prior reviews so they will be spread over two days. If there is a problem with your assigned time-slot please try and find someone to trade with and then let me know.

You will have 20 minutes in which to present your current work and research (again, please organize your power-points beforehand so we don't loose time between presentations), followed by 15-20 minutes of discussion. You may include a review of work you have done over the course of the year or concentrate on what you have done this quarter.

Either way, you also must present a brief proposal for the work and research you plan to engage in during your second year (and over the summer!). Please post your proposal on your blog (or put hard copy in faculty mailboxes if you prefer) a week before your review date.

A good proposal does not attempt to determine the outcome of the work or the writing you will do during your second year. Rather it lays out the fundamental issues, concerns, ideas, questions and influences that are the driving force behind the work and research in which you have been engaged and which will shape your activity and production in the second year.

Last week all the MFA students traveled to New York to visit the Whitney Biennial and some galleries. I (Eric Steen) think I can speak for all of us when I say that we really had a blast and that the experience was enlightening in more ways than one. For me, the visit demystified what I thought was some supernatural and unreachable New Yorkness. I've read parts of William De Kooning's biography, and he felt small behind the shadow the French Surrealists. But then the war started and the French artists travelled to New York. All of a sudden de Kooning realized that these artists were human just as he was, and maybe in some ways he felt more empowered by his own work - that maybe he too had something to offer. Being in New York made me realize that our group has a lot to offer.

I would like to mention a couple galleries that I thought had some interesting things happening. On the 5th floor of the New Museum was a space called the "museum as hub." The New Museum has teamed up with four other museums around the globe and are launching various projects about their neighborhoods. It doesn't seem like these museums are collaborating in any sense other than briefly talking together and coming up with a theme. They are calling each other partners. There was a drawing on a wall on the 5th floor that diagrammed an artists neighborhood project. There were arrows pointing to how one person or event led to the next event - some of the events included dinners or community education. This was a simple way to document an extensive project visually for an art space. I know that there are all sorts of artists and collectives working on projects similar to this and I think it's a great thing that museums are attempting to take on these projects. The New Museum made these projects seem very official, like an artwork on a white wall, but I really can't find too much information on their website that pinpoints exactly what the "museum as hub" project is - they sort of beat around the bush with it. I understand that the name implies that the museum will serve as, well, a hub for launching neighborhood based projects, but I don't know how well this is communicated on the website. I think it's a cool start though.

Another great start is the Environmental Performance Actions (EPA) at Exit Art. The EPA was their first attempt at a new program they are calling Social-Environmental Aesthetics (SEA). This show consisted mainly of formal displays of artist projects that have used the social realm to address environmental concerns. Future Farmers and Amnity Works were a part of the show, as were about 30 other groups or artists. When viewing the show, you would look at a picture and then read the text which described in some detail an artist project. For example Rapid Response posted signs, guerilla style, that read "Global Warming" at Exxon gas stations. You would read about the project and look at the image or two posted on the wall. There was really a nice conglomeration of projects and being that this is the first time Exit Art has done this, and that I think I heard them say SEA will permanently take their underground gallery space, I really look forward to seeing what comes next. As an artist, ideally it would be great if the space could be used for more of a hands on learning, some sort of didactic showcase...

Some other major highlights and unforgettable moments of the trip include:
- Being on Neighborhood Public Radio (NPR) at the Whitney Biennial for about an hour. We got to talk about our art projects and our MFA program on air.

Here's a snippet of Cyrus and Sandy on air. This really does no justice for our show though:

- Listening to Matthew Higgs from White Columns talk about his hope for a social revolution in the arts. He believes that if every nonprofit supported another nonprofit the entire system for the arts would be revolutionized. From what I had seen, White Columns seems to be taking steps in a great direction - and interestingly enough their budget has doubled since he's started working there three years ago. Some other galleries that we visited felt like they too needed a jumpstart to get back on track. There was a real freshness and energy here.

-Katy overheard the people at the Sculpture Center say "oh look, they're all sitting down, that's so West Coast" when we were all sitting on the floor listening to the curator talk. Then, the other person at the counter said, "Maybe they'll all sing Koombaya." Some of us thought that was funny.

-The Coco Fusco performance at the Whitney was quite a treat. Fusco critiqued the use of female sexuality as an art of interrogation and "tactical creativity."

-There was a nice place around the corner from our hotel, I think they call it Honey Space. It has been converted into an art gallery but it apparently is just some building with unfinished construction. So the gallery is always open, it has no door and people could probably steal the artwork really easily. Posie's band played a show there during their last night. I guess it's closing. Working History Exhibit and More Artist Talks at Reed

From January 22 - March 2, 2008, the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery presents Working History, African American Objects, an exploration of African American art and material culture that exhibits contemporary African American art alongside historical ephemera. The exhibition is curated by Cooley Gallery director and curator Stephanie Snyder from U.S. collections, artists' studios, and regional archives.

Working History, African American Objects includes contemporary art created during the last twenty years, a time during which material and theoretical examinations of culture, politics, history, and identity came to the fore in American art. Each artist in Working History considers historical objects, forms, and narratives, often migrating subjects across disciplines, as when Kianga Ford collaborates with an abstract mathematician and a statistician in order to consider various definitions of race in American history.

Here's a little comment on the University museum situation in town on PORT. Maybe PSU does need to bump it up a little. It probably isn't as simple as Jeff makes it out to be, but It would be cool to have a better show space for the MFA exhibitions. That's for sure.

Fall Term Reviews for All!

On Friday, November 30, all first- and second-year MFA students presented their fall quarter research to the faculty and their fellow students. Several presentation styles were in evidence, including some lesser-known powerpoint bells and whistles, as well as flashes of live action. Amy Steele's creative-block-busting moves rounded out the morning, while Cyrus Smith's choreographed celebration brought the day to a festive end. Later, some participants were seen de-briefing at the Candlelight next door. First reports indicate that the single-day format worked well. Feedback on the day's structure is encouraged.

Planning for NYC Trip

Some of you have been asking about plans for our trip to NYC and the Whitney Biennial. This year the biennial (Mar 6-Jun 1) includes a short run of performances and installations at the Park Avenue Armory (Mar 4-Mar 22). To take advantage of that, we are planning to move our trip up to the week before spring break, Mar 18 or 19 - Mar 23 or 24. This is finals week of winter term. Please begin to think about how this will fit into your plans. Also, the Dean's office is interested in some kind of "trip cam" account of your activities so ideas for this are welcome.

Avant Blog/More Reporting From the Blogosphere

Following up the November "Art in America" article by Peter Plagens titled "Report From the Blogosphere," PNCA will host PORT's Avant Blog. A panel talk which seeks to expand and focus the conversation begun by Plagens. The panel will include: Amy Bernstein of PORT, Jeff Jahn, co-founder of PORT featured in "Report From the Blogosphere," Erin Langner, Communications Assistant at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle and a regular contributor to Hankblog, the Henry Art Gallery’s blog, and Carolyn Zick, blogger at "Dangerous Chunky." Bruce Guenther, Chief Curator Portland Art Museum, will server as moderator.

Avantika Bawa artist lecture this Friday!

Avantika Bawa (ATL) will be speaking about her new project this Friday, November 2 at 3pm in the Autzen Gallery. Bawa is a visual artist, curator, and co-founder of the arts and culture magazine Drain (http://www.drainmag.com)

Working site-specifically as well as with objects fabricated in her studio, Bawa continues to explore the relationship of these objects with the time and space they occupy. In Sit, Stack Bawa puts the act of drawing into the service of sculptural design so that handmade gestures intimately connect to architectural supports. Functional flat materials such as cardboard and Styrofoam become flexible three-dimensional structures. Bawa's work defines a new territory that allows for subtlety, anti-monumentality and unexpected levels of candor.

Her exhibition Sit, Stack is opening this Saturday Nov. 3 in the Autzen. Please join us for the reception from 5-7p.

Submit three choices for your Exhibition Review Committee adviser and the names of proposed committee members in writing to Pat's mailbox by Friday, November 16.

Run your transcript and compare it with the program plan in the 2006/07 MFA handbook; check that current class enrollment is accurate (i.e., you are enrolled in sections for 2nd year students); schedule an advising appointment if you have questions about your transcript.

Review and refine your proposal for your Exhibition Project (to be re-presented at fall term review 11/30).

Work with Jenene to finalize gallery assignments and schedule for your exhibition projects.

Get the lead out.

Larry Rinder is the Dean of the College at the California College of Arts. He has published poetry, fiction and art criticism extensively during his career. Rinder will be lecturing at PNCA for students and faculty on art criticism and education.

Lacy Jane Roberts, Visiting Artist in Textiles, U of O, November 8th, 7:30
Roberts is an accomplished artist and author, recently published in both Extra/Ordinary: Craft Culture and Contemporary Art and Sightlines. Her written and visual work surround reimagining craft identities using tactics of queer theory. Roberts received an MFA in Textiles and an MA in Visual Criticism from the California College of the Arts. Her work can be viewed online at www.laceyjaneroberts.com

November 13 Lecture: Gary Hill at Reed College

Recognized internationally as one of the most important artists of his generation, Gary Hill has been working with electronic media and language since the early 1970s, producing a large body of single-channel video works, mixed-media installations and performance work. He comes to Reed through the Stephen E. Ostrow Distinguished Visitors Program in the Visual Arts. 7 p.m., Vollum lecture hall.

Do-Ho Suh, Oregon State University, Corvallis, November 14, 7:oo
Best known for his intricate sculptures that defy conventional notions of scale and site-specificity, Suh’s work draws attention to the ways viewers occupy and inhabit public space. Whether addressing the dynamic of personal space versus public space, or exploring the fine line between strength in numbers and homogeneity, Do-Ho Suh’s sculptures continually question the identity of the individual in today’s increasingly transnational, global society. Do-Ho Suh represented Korea at the 2001 Venice Biennale. A retrospective of the artist’s work was held jointly at the Seattle Art Museum and the Seattle Asian Art Museum in 2002. Major exhibitions of Suh’s work have also been held at the Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris (2001), the Serpentine Gallery, London (2002), and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, MO (2002-03).

Beth Campbell, PNCA, Swigert Commons, November 15, 6:30 pm
Currently Artist-in-residence at PNCA, Campbell is a New York based artist working with drawing, painting, audio, installation,video and photography to explore the psychology and perception of the self and one’s physical surroundings. Campbell shows with Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery in New York and has had previous solo shows at Roebling Hall in New York, Sandroni Rey Gallery in Los Angeles, Sala Diaz in San Antonio and the Art Academy of Cincinnati. She just completed a major project with the Public Art Fund in NYC titled “Potential Store Fronts” and will be included in the upcoming 6th Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

We had a great start to the term with our trip to Seattle last Friday. Thanks to Harrell for arranging for visits with Marisa Sanchez, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Seattle Art Museum and Sculpture Park; Scott Lawrimore; James Harris; Robin Held, Chief Curator at the Frye Museum and Sara Krawjewski, Associate Curator at the Henry Art Gallery.
